First-time exhibition of Latvian children’s books to be on view in the Republic of Korea

On 6 February, at 16:00, the National Library for Children and Young Adults of Korea will host the opening of a children’s book exhibition, “In the Magic Forest. Stories by ‘Fairytale Grandmother’ Margarita Stāraste”. The exhibition, devoted to the Centenary of Latvia, is organised by the Embassy of Latvia in cooperation with the National Library for Children and Young Adults, and will be on display until 25 April.

The exhibition will showcase works by Margarita Stāraste, a favourite Latvian author and illustrator of children’s books. She is one of the best-known children’s writers in Latvia, whose stories have also been translated into a number of languages, including English, German, Polish, Lithuanian, Russian, and Japanese.

In 1999, Margarita Stāraste received the Order of the Three Stars, the highest decoration of the Republic of Latvia, for her contribution to children’s literature.

Besides the books, the visitors will have an opportunity to view Latvian animation films based on story lines and images from Stāraste’s books, and see puppets made for stage productions of the legendary author’s tales at the Latvian Puppet Theatre.

The exhibition room will also display paintings and drawings created by students from the Children’s Art School at Liepāja Secondary School of Music, Art and Design (LMMDV) as greetings to Latvian Olympic athletes in Korea. In their works, through the colours of ice, snow and Latvia, children and young people have captured the beauty of sports. Another event to raise Latvia’s profile abroad is the exhibition of tactile art by a talented Latvian artist, Agnese Rudzīte, “Letters from Latvia”.

The Embassy of Latvia extends its gratitude to everyone who supported the exhibition and made it happen: the National Library of Latvia, the Latvian Puppet Theatre, the students of the LMMDV Children’s Art School and their teachers Laine Kinstlere, Brigita Pomerante, Kristīne Ulberte and Kristīne Vizbule, the children’s art curator and artist Agnese Rudzīte, the Avārijas Brigāde film studio, Gunda Vaivode from Latvian Radio – LR3. Special thanks go to Margarita Stāraste’s grandchildren Ieva and Nils Erdmanis.
