Magical Heroes. Transformation workshop with Reinis Hofmanis for children — Latvia 100

Time:12:00 — 16:30

Within the framework of the Riga Photography Biennial 2018, the master class Magical heroes will be held in Gallery Museum LV and Latvian National Museum of Art on April 29.

The portraits of LARP-ists by photographer Reinis Hofmanis are a witty and striking manifestation of merging the real and the magical, and creating associations with fantastical characters from fairytales, films and childhood adventures.

What exactly is a LARP (live action role-playing game) and why do people like to play such games? Can you imagine yourself as one of the strange characters inhabiting Reinis Hofmanis’ photographs? The transformation workshop Magical Heroes will offer anyone a chance to find out more about LARP and other mysterious role plays, and invite your imagination to soar free whilst creating the identity and outfit of your own magical hero together with a representative from the LARPer community and textile artist Diāna Dimza-Dimme. You’ll transform into a creature new to this world. Thereby a community of unique magical heroes ready to launch an important mission and mythical adventures will be created within the space of a day. The newly created heroes will be immortalised in a magical photoshoot.

Riga Photography Biennial, an international contemporary art event, will take place from 5 April in Riga, Liepāja, Cēsis, Daugavpils and Tartu (Estonia) as part of a wider programme celebrating the centenary of the Republic of Latvia, offering a varied programme of exhibitions, performances, symposium, discussions and masterclasses.

The theme of this year’s Biennial is self-awareness – who we are and who we chose to become in times when social, political and cultural dynamics afford us continuous and new transformation opportunities. The title of the Biennial ‘I Like Your Face’ using face as a metaphor highlights the complex processes involved in the formation of identity and meaning.
