ORIGINS/Textile as Concept and as a Material Aspect of Latvian Identity - Interdisciplinary Art Exhibition — Latvia 100

Datums:02.02.2018 — 18.03.2018

The question of where we come from, our origin, is a deep and essential one. The answer must be sought as much in personal intimacy as in out nation as a whole. Just as the ocean shore is made up of many grains of sand, each of us with our unique yet related cultural codes, together make up a people.

A lineage is a special and unique set of elements that, like nuances of color, make up the spectrum of our nation - be they calm, temperamental, spiteful, or inert, it is precisely this distinctive selection of ingredients that determines the unique and characteristic flavour of Latvia. Cloth is one of the conceptual lines that displays both presence and inclusivity as a material and in its practical uses, however cloth can also be used as a meaningful semantic measure of the character of the Latvian language and way of life, reflecting the viability of out concepts and ideas.

By creating a dialogue with some aspect of the Latvian character that is significant to themselves, the artists participating in this exibition are searching for the Latvian lineage and for their own personal stories. In doing so they also create a landscape of identificatory symbols that either confirm or topple the assumptions we have about ourselves.

Created and done by: Riga Art Space in cooperation with the Latvian Academy of Art
